Weed eater string size chart: inches to millimeters

Use this chart to translate a printed diameter between inch and metric units. Use the trimmer and head manual to decide whether that diameter is approved.

There is no universal “best size.” A chart can compare numbers. It cannot establish that a line fits your spool, head, guard, motor, or region-specific tool version.

Common nominal trimmer-line diameters

Package labelNominal metric conversionFitment note
0.065 in1.651 mm (about 1.65 mm)Common size; use only when your exact manual allows it.
0.080 in2.032 mm (about 2.03 mm)Common size; do not assume all heads that accept 0.065 also accept 0.080.
0.085 in2.159 mm (about 2.16 mm)Conversion only; verify model/head limit.
0.095 in2.413 mm (about 2.41 mm)Common size; may be too heavy for some homeowner trimmers.
0.105 in2.667 mm (about 2.67 mm)Conversion only; typically demands explicit equipment approval.
0.130 in3.302 mm (about 3.30 mm)Conversion only; do not infer fit from another model.

Conversion method: millimeters = inches × 25.4. Example: 0.080 × 25.4 = 2.032 mm. Inch values printed to three decimal places often round to fewer metric decimals on packaging. The converted value is not a tolerance or an approval.

How to choose the right row

  1. Read the complete trimmer model and SKU from the tool label.
  2. Identify the installed head; it may differ from the factory head.
  3. Find the operator manual for that exact model, market, and revision.
  4. Use only the diameter and material/shape the manual lists for that head.
  5. When the tool label or manual conflicts with a chart, stop and follow the applicable manual or contact the maker.

Does thicker line cut better or last longer?

Not automatically. A thicker diameter can increase load or exceed the design limit. Shape, material, cutting technique, vegetation, and contact with hard edges also affect wear. Consider the reason line is being consumed before changing products. A manual’s maximum diameter is a boundary, not a performance target.

Inch size vs “gauge” or line color

Trimmer-line diameter is usually stated as a fraction of an inch or in millimeters. Color is not a standardized diameter code, and a colored/twisted profile may not measure like a round line. Read the package label; for loose line, a caliper gives only an approximate check.

Look up the exact combination: open the model/head checker or inspect the source-linked model index. Unknown combinations remain unverified.

Frequently asked questions

What size is 0.080 trimmer line in mm?

0.080 inch is exactly 2.032 mm, which is commonly rounded to about 2.03 mm. That conversion does not tell you whether your machine supports it.

Is 0.095 line the same as 2.4 mm?

0.095 inch is 2.413 mm, commonly rounded to 2.4 mm on labels. Check the product manual for the exact permitted diameter and line type.

Can I put a bigger line in my trimmer?

Only if the exact manual for the fitted head permits that diameter and line material. Do not test an oversize line as a troubleshooting method.
